Training Camp is coming!

You all continue to impress me with your appetite for fantasy football - there are now 80 of us in the FFLibrarian League and the e-mail requests to join the monster league keep coming. I have to cap it at 96 teams so if you'd like to play, I recommend e-mailing me sooner rather than later.

I was reading Athlon/Grogan Sports' 8 Training Camps You Must Visit Before You Die article and was desperately wishing that some team out there might be camping it up in the middle of Nebraska, as my husband and I will be spending some quality time in Nebraska in a few weeks, hopefully flying across I-80 as we head to NYC. I have yet to visit Nebraska - it's one of the handful of states I haven't been to yet though the reports from my fellow I-80 travelers aren't exactly glowing. If it's anything like driving through Kansas (sorry, Kansas folks), then it will be a rather boring leg of the trip, but perhaps better than battling through Chicagoland traffic. Any I-80 experts who have tips on great rest stops (oxymoron?), please do share.
  • Brace yourselves - there's week 1 start/sit advice already. FFXtreme is well, extreme, and has what I believe to be the earliest start/sit advice out there. Rad.
  • No-Offseason.com has updated their rookie draft board for those of you who are mostly updating keeper leagues with rookies - or those who are just set on finding the next big rookie sensation.
  • Check out KFFL's uber-helpful Fantasy football: running back handcuff chart in case you're trying to determine who to target in those later rounds.
  • I snagged Felix Jones as my RB3 with the 6.09 pick of my expert mock draft because I really believe in the Cowboys o-line. I found the Fifth Down's article If Only the Cowboys Had Better Blocking interesting - lines up pretty well with my belief that Jones is worth taking a chance on here, particularly if the Boys can tweak their run blocking just a bit.
  • I like Rotoworld's write-up on Steve McNair - A Strange Fourth.

In looking at your expert draft, I would say it's time to get Owen Daniels as your TE if you like him a lot. Otherwise you can put that off a few rounds and take a shot with someone like Zach Miller (the OAK one), John Carlson or Visanthe Shiancoe. With six teams already owning TEs, there's not much dropoff in waiting past Owens.

If not Owens, then now might be a good time to add a QB2. WR4 and RB4 are tempting, but with another pick coming at 9.04 (pending is 8.08), comparable RBs and WRs should remain. Hasselbeck has some nice upside, but Garrard is the real value here. I've seen many projections putting him ahead of Palmer, Roethlisberger, Schaub, Cutler, and yes, even Romo. It might be a bit of a reach here according to ADP, but still a great value in my opinion. (caveat: I don't know if Hasselbeck or Garrard have the same bye as Romo)

PS

If not TE or QB, definitely take RB instead or WR. Despite only 6 pickes between 8.08 and 9.04, there could easily be 4 RBs taken in that time.
Already grabbed John Carlson with my 8th round pick (drop off after him is huge in my opinion) but don't have to wait too long before it snakes back around my way, and yes, I'll be targeting an RB for sure. I think I can wait on the QB2 for a few more rounds.

Wonder if the Da'Boys will be able to run at all against the da'Skins next season? I can see Albert Haynesworth pushing the Boys O-line backwards quite frequently.

Odd thought, why was Michael Crabtree taken before Josh Morgan in your expert draft? Morgan is most likely to see targets than Crabtree than season. The 49ers seem very heavily loaded with WR talent this year, even before Crabtree was drafted in the 1st round. Just hard to see him, being an elite #1 or #2 in his first season, even though I think he was a stud WR in college out of Texas Tech. Why? Jason Hill, Josh Morgan, Isaac Bruce and Davis in the TE spot are going to take away his targets when they throw most of the time I think.

Donald Driver a few picks later, would be been a safer pick in FF. Even with two talented rising young WRs in the 3rd & 4th spots in Green Bay.

Question about the FFlibrarian league, will there be a flexible position any type combination used?

On the timing of the FFLibrarian league draft, I'd prefer a date after the 1st two week of preseason NFL games. So we're all seen the rookies in pads against a few veterans from other teams in real game play.

I know DeAngelo Williams's huge game during one matchup last pre-season helped tilted me to drafted him, in combination with other measurements. Likewise I liked what I saw & heard about Chris Johnson of the Titans last preseason, and drafted him then too as a rookie. If we draft FF players in July, we'd all lose a valuable data point. Besides seeing how Coaching might influence a player's given amount of touches/targets during a game.

I found the university & old railroad town of Kearney, Nebraska a fun road stop. Lots of neat turn of the century Victorian houses to explore, if your up for walking around.

Surprisingly there's a bunch of college age USC Trojans fans in Kearney.

Looking at who's left in your expert draft, he's what I noticed:

WR: Terrell Owens, isn't see very highly by the experts this season, compared to the Nerd ranking. Anti-Big Talker discounter?

Other WRs with week 8 matchups, your Bye Wk:

Kevin Walters (vs Buffalo), Derrick Mason (vs Denver Broncos), Braylon Edwards (vs Bears)

Assuming you not a fan of T.O., I'd take Derrick Mason vs the Broncos for that week #8 matchup. The Ravens have the 3rd highest blow-out chance of any matchup in week 8, only the Chargers (vs Raiders) and the Panthers (vs the Cardinals) have a better chance of a blowout win, based on last year's A.E.R.'s. Mason has a good chance at a huge game against the rebuilding Broncos defense.

Thoughts?

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this...

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha...
