2012 average position rankings

Back by popular demand is my annual average position rankings spreadsheet. This morning I gathered up the top 150 overall rankings from 11 different experts (10 sites, but CBS has their 2 gurus) and averaged them together to create a helping hand to all the drafters out there. The rankings for 2012 come from: ESPN, NFL.com, CBSSports.com (both Dave Richard and Jamey Eisenberg), KFFL.com, Ask the Commish, Yahoo!, FFCalculator (ADP), FFToolbox, ProFootballWeekly (winner of the 2011 multi-year - sorry, Fantasy Shrink won in 2011! - preseason accuracy contest) and SI.

This year I decided to go ahead and put the spreadsheet into Dropbox, which should be an easy way for you to all get the excel version. If you have any issues with this though, just shoot me an e-mail. Otherwise, click here for the 2012 average position rankings spreadsheet.

For some of the nitty gritty, read on:
  • I gathered all the ranking within an hour or two this morning, but some sites had been updated more recently than others. I also tried to ensure that the experts all used the same scoring system (this is non-PPR) but many sites didn't note their scoring system at all.
  • As in the past, I've included the standard deviation for each player's ranking so that you can get an idea of how much consensus there was on a player's ranking across the 11 experts. What this means is that the lower the standard deviation, the more of a consensus there is on the ranking for that player. In some cases where just one site submitted a ranking for that player, you of course won't see a standard deviation at all. I created another column that adds the standard deviation to the average ranking to create one number to represent both a player's ranking and the level of agreement on that ranking
  • You'll find these 11 rankings listed as separate tabs in the spreadsheet in case you just want to look at the data from each site or even want to do your own analysis.
  • I included bye weeks in here and have my fingers crossed that they're all accurate but don't be surprised to see an error or two in there since I added those in at the end of this analysis when my brain was semi-fried.
I'll try to get an updated version of this done at the end of the month and if there's a site/expert out there that you'd like to see included, please leave a note in the comments.

Enjoy!

Thrilled about all the great links and advice; this is my go to site for fantasy. I was curious about the difference between your spreadsheet and the consensus rankings that Fantasypros offer, and after looking at your spreadsheet, I definitely love the formatting and hard work you put into it.

Thank you so much for this.

Great work. Love your blog. There's one issue I have with the list that I'm not sure can be dealt with easily. There are players who are on some lists but not on others (presumably because they didn't crack the top 150/200). Because the APR and std deviation are calculated based only on those lists for which they appear, their APR is inflated. For example, the Chargers D have the highest APR for a defense even though they were only ranked on one list (KFFL). Clearly, the consensus isn't that they're the best defense, but they appear highest on the list. Note, KFFL didn't even have them as their #1 defense. One possible suggestion is to fill in the "blanks" with the ranking of the lowest positional player for that particular list. Example: Jahvid Best wasn't on "Ask the Commish" rankings but you could fill in the rank of the lowest RB (plus one if you'd like) that does appear in those rankings. I know it's a lot of work to look up all those positional ranks, but an easier method might be to just sub in the value 150 or 200. Although this would probably skew some players the other way.

PPR Version=Go to FantasyPros or just overvalue WR's and RB's who are in passing offenses. This clearly was a ton of work done for free, be grateful. Thanks for the list, it's been slaying my mocks.

Wow, this is incredible. Thank you for taking the time to do all this! Just a note to other folks out there; this is even more helpful when you add a filter in row 2 so you can sort by position.

If you do update this that would be awesome!

Labor Day FF links

Happy long weekend! Here's hoping most of you are free to enjoy the 3-day weekend and the relaxation and fun that comes with it. I spent my Sunday participating in 3 fantasy football drafts scattered throughout the day and night, but I think I've finally wrapped up my drafts for the year. So like many of you I'm now turning my attention to the Week 1 games! But before we get to some player rankings and prep for Week 1, I want to make sure that all you experts out there are aware of the upcoming deadline for the annual accuracy contest that I run with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. I compare preseason positional rankings from experts to the final outcome of the fantasy season to see which site had the most accurate preseason rankings, and this year's deadline is fast approaching: September 9th by kickoff. Check out the info on the FSTA site for more details and be sure to e-mail me your submissions. Now, onto Week 1! First up, let's get to some of this

2010 Week 2 consensus start/sit

Greetings and happy weekend. I've got this week's consensus start/sit for you which is a tally of all the start/sit votes that players received in the various start/sit articles that I linked to earlier in the week. So while these aren't my personal recommendations, I do think knowing what the consensus is could be of help when making lineup decisions...so enjoy! Note: the players are listed in no particular order. QB Start: Michael Vick, Kyle Orton, Matt Ryan, Jason Campbell Sit: David Garrard, Alex Smith, Jay Cutler, Vince Young, Carson Palmer RB Start: LeSean McCoy, Darren McFadden, Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jackson Sit: Tim Hightower, C.J. Spiller, Beanie Wells, Ronnie Brown WR Start: Santana Moss, Legedu Naanee, Malcolm Floyd, Mike Williams (TB), Dez Bryant Sit: Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree TE Start: Chris Cooley, Todd Heap, John Carlson, Jermichael Finley Sit: Jermaine Gresham, Owen Daniels, Tony Scheffler, Jeremy Shockey, Bo Scaife Kicker Start: La

A hiatus

Update:  It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that yesterday, August 30th, I delivered our stillborn daughter, Caroline Mary. This has been an almost surreal and definitely heartbreaking experience and I appreciate the support in each and every one of your notes. Caroline will be honored and loved always. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers - they mean the world to our family. I have been a very poor blogger this month and feel I owe you all an explanation, particularly as this is crunch time for draft prep. I hope this is not too personal of a look into my life since I know most of you are just here for the football. I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and we have learned that our baby (a little girl!) has triploidy, a chromosomal abnormality that means she has three copies of every chromosome instead of the normal two. The doctors have explained that it's a completely random occurrence and fairly rare that she has made it this far along, but tha
